Rodgers plots £7m cut-price bid & Liverpool transfer would have been ideal – Best of LFC
After being handed the unenviable task of replacing Anfield legend Kenny Dalglish you’d presume that Brendan Rodgers would keep his objectives for the forthcoming season as grounded as possible. You in the hope of lowering fan expectations and springing a surprise by nailing a place in the Premier League’s upper echelons. But in his first team meeting since taking charge Rodgers laid bare his intentions to lead the Reds back into the Champions League. It’s ambitious but a little misguided. Interestingly though the Northern Irishman has brought about a shift in mentality informing his squad they can leave the club if they’re not willing to fight for a place amongst Europe’s elite. It’s in stark contrast to Dalglish’s mindset saw him prefer to emphasise referees and individuals decisions as the reason for poor performances instead of holding his players acceptable for their shortcomings. Adding that burden and sense of responsibility to their shoulders is a shrewd ploy from Rodgers to motivate a group that drastically underachieved in the previous campaign.

Quote of the Week
“You can only sell the dream going forward. There’s a lot of nostalgia surrounding this club, but it’s important that we recognise this is 2012 and we’re not in the Champions League.
“The top players want to play at that level. Steven Gerrard wants to play at that level, Jamie Carragher, they’re players who have won it. In the coming years we’ll strive towards that. If that’s not enough for a player, then they will go, simple as that.” Brendan Rodgers tells his players they can go if they aren’t willing to fight for Champions League football
