Ligue 1: Montpellier 1 St Etienne 1
Montpellier’s hopes of collecting their first home win of the season continued to elude them on Friday.
Determined Saint-Etienne held on for a share of the spoils after star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang gave them the lead into first-half stoppage time.
The Gabon international first hit the post but made no mistake with the rebound, Max-Alain Gradel crossing for Aubameyang to net his fourth goal of the season.
Christophe Galtier’s Saint-Etienne came out after the break looking for the second goal that was liable to make the points safe and Romain Hamuma and Gradel both had opportunities to extend the lead.
Yet Montpellier belatedly began to create chances and Vitorino Hilton had a header cleared off the line by Jeremy Clement before the hour.
It was Souleymane Camara, starting at striker again in preference to Emmanuel Herrera, who snatched the equaliser 20 minutes from time.
The Senegal striker fired past Ruffier for his second league goal of the season following good work from Remy Cabella.
A point was a fair result and Saint-Etienne moved into provisional eighth with seven points, while Montpellier are 14th with five points.
