The former England midfielder tips his old club to begin a period of dominance in European football, praising their infrastructure and warning that only complacency can stop them

Former Bayern Munich and England midfielder Owen Hargreaves has tipped his old team to begin a period of in which they “steamroller everything” following their clash with Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final.

<ad/> The 32-year-old represented die Roten for 10 years before joining Manchester United in 2007 and won the continental prize with them, defeating Valencia in the 2001 final.

Hargreaves believes that the Bundesliga giants are at the top of the European game at present, telling the Daily Mail: “You have to say they’re No.1.

“That team is as good as you’ll find, with a work ethic. I’d be shocked if they didn’t steamroller everything over the next few years. The only issue is complacency.”

With former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola set to take over at the Allianz Arena in the summer, the former Three Lions star feels that the Spaniard may find it difficult to follow this season’s potential treble-winning exploits but that he is going to the perfect club to keep up their success.

“The infrastructure has always been there,” he explained. “People asked me why Guardiola chose to go there, not Chelsea. Well, he’s a smart man. If Bayern is not the best-run club in Europe, you would struggle to find a better one.

<ad/> “But if they win the treble, what’s he going to do? It’s only downhill from there. I’ve heard great things about Guardiola and maybe it’s good that he keeps it fresh. Barcelona is the best example. They were the best team ever to play this game and to get beat as they did in the semi-final can only be down to complacency.

“Any team with success over a period can fall victim to that. We thought they were undefeatable and then to go and get beat 7-0 over two legs [by Bayern] … it wasn’t even close. It could have been 12 or 13.

“Bayern have the right balance,” he added. “They’re a model for a lot of people. Their stadium is probably the best in Europe, their training ground is one of the best, commercially they turn a profit and make their own money. It’s done naturally.

“It’s mostly [club president] Uli Hoeness who has made the club what it is. He’s the heart and soul. There was a time when he said they had to decide if they had enough money to cut the trees and plants down and to go from that to where they are is pretty amazing.”

The following statement was issued today by the Los Angeles Lakers regarding the death of former Laker Flynn Robinson:

“We are very sad to hear of the passing of Flynn Robinson,” said Lakers Executive Vice President of Business Operations Jeanie Buss. “Flynn played an important role on the 1971-72 Lakers team that brought Los Angeles its first NBA Championship and won what is still an NBA-record 33 consecutive games.

“Lakers fans might remember [Robinson] as ‘Mr. Instant Point,’ a nickname given to him by the great Chick Hearn, a nickname that was well earned as Flynn led the reserves in scoring that season, averaging 10 points in 16 minutes off the bench. He was a proud part of our Lakers heritage, participating in numerous reunions and special events over the years and he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this time.”

Marca is reporting that Malaga are on the verge of signing Arsenal de Sarandi defender Lisandro Lopez.

According to the Spanish newspaper, club sporting director Mario Husillos and general manager Vicente Casado travelled to Argentina on Wednesday to negotiate a deal with the Argentine club.

With Arsenal having already rejected a €4 million offer for the defender from AC Milan, los Boquerones will have to delve deep into their pockets if they want to win the race for Lopez.

Marca understands that Malaga officials have already met with the player’s agent Gustavo Goni, who is currently located in Spain.

Lisandro Lopez is widely regarded as one of the best central defenders in Argentina’s top flight, with his technical skills likely to come in handy in a league such as La Liga.

While impressing the visiting scouts with his rock-solid displays at the back, the 23-year-old has notched up no less than 15 goals in 97 league matches for Arsenal de Sarandi.

The “Monday Night Football” game is especially significant because the iconic tight end won championships as a player with the Bears and Cowboys. The Bears drafted Ditka fifth overall in the 1961 NFL Draft, and he played six seasons before heading to the Philadelphia Eagles.

In 1988, Ditka became the first tight end to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Currently an NFL commentator, Ditka, 73, will become the 14th Bears player to have his number retired and the first since Dick Butkus and Gale Sayers were honored in 1994.

Despite 11 years as coach of the Bears — and the 1986 season where Ditka led the organization to its only Super Bowl victory — former team CEO Michael McCaskey fired Ditka in 1992. It was part of a storied feud between Ditka and the organization.

The Tribune suggests the decision to honor Ditka is a major reconciliatory gesture on behalf of the Bears.

Twelve players have worn No. 89 since Ditka, most recently tight end Matt Spaeth the last two seasons.

DETROIT (AP) — Jim Leyland is usually pretty confident about his managerial moves.

Thursday, though, he wasn’t entirely sure if he had done something smart or stupid.

With the game tied in the eighth, Omar Infante started the inning with a single, and Leyland decided to have Torii Hunter
bunt him to second.

That put the go-ahead run in scoring position, but meant taking the bat out of the hands of Miguel Cabrera , baseball’s hottest
hitter.

“That was a tough call,” Leyland acknowledged after the game. “That’s definitely a move that the fans are going to discuss,
and I don’t have any problem with that. I wasn’t sure, either.”

Sure enough, Minnesota manager Ron Gardenhire immediately signaled for the intentional walk. The reason Leyland took the chance?
Prince Fielder was coming up next, and facing right-hander Jared Burton .

“If they had a tough lefty to pitch to Prince – maybe
Glen Perkins
if it had been the ninth inning – I might not have bunted,” Leyland said. “Prince has 40 RBIs hitting behind
Miguel Cabrera
, so I was willing to roll the dice with him.”

The plan worked, but only barely. Fielder hit what looked like a possible double-play grounder, but it deflected off Burton’s
glove and past second baseman Brian Dozier . Infante scored easily, and the Tigers held on to win 7-6.

“You hate walking anyone to pitch to
Prince Fielder
, I can tell you that right now,” Gardenhire said. “But you’ve got to take your choice, and the way Cabrera is swinging the
bat, you’ve got to do it. We got the groundball. It just didn’t work out.”

Before the intentional walk, Cabrera had driven in three runs, including his sixth homer in four games. He’s matched a career
high by homering in four straight games. He has also walked five times in the four games, and Fielder has followed all five
with hits, driving in seven more runs. In the four games, the pair have combined to drive in 20 runs.

“It’s absolutely incredible what they are doing,” Tigers starter
Rick Porcello
said. “If I were pitching against them, I’d just walk both of them every time they came up.”

Joaquin Benoit (1-0) picked up the win with a perfect inning of relief, while Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his fifth
save.

The Tigers trailed 6-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, but scored three times off three Minnesota pitchers. Infante
singled and Cabrera walked with one out, bringing Brian Duensing into the game. He allowed RBI singles to Prince Fielder and
Victor Martinez before giving way to Burton.

Jhonny Peralta greeted Burton (0-2) with a game-tying double, and Matt Tuiasosopo was hit by a pitch to load the bases before
Brayan Pena and Andy Dirks popped out to end the inning.

“We gave the game over to our bullpen, and they usually do the job,” Gardenhire said. “Just didn’t happen today.”

The Tigers had taken a 2-0 lead in the first when Cabrera lifted a 2-2 pitch into the bullpens beyond the left-field fence.
It was the first of his six homers in four games that he had pulled – the others had all been to center field or right-center.

Porcello almost got a second straight inning-ending double play in the second, but Jhonny Peralta juggled Dozier’s grounder
and Dozier beat the relay throw to allow Justin Morneau to score.

Minnesota started the third with three straight singles, tying the game, and Josh Willingham made it 5-2 by pulling Porcello’s
pitch deep into the left-field stands.

Scott Diamond retired 10 straight batters after Tuiasosopo’s second-inning single, but Detroit loaded the bases with two out
in the fifth on two singles and a walk. Cabrera bounced an infield single up the middle, making it 5-3, but Diamond got Fielder
to pop out and end the inning.

Detroit threatened again in the sixth, putting runners on second and third with two out, but Fien came on to strike out pinch-hitter
Andy Dirks . Willingham then moved the lead to three runs with a solo homer off Darin Downs in the seventh.

“That’s a tough loss,” Willingham said. “I felt good at the plate, and I was able to get the pitchers to elevate the ball.
That’s the key to doing what I do.”

NOTES: The start of the game was delayed for an hour by rain. … Twins shortstop
Pedro Florimon
left the game after the top of the third with an sprained right index finger. Florimon appeared to sustain the injury while
sliding head-first into third base. Gardenhire said after the game that Florimon is day-to-day. … The fans broke into a
chant of “Let’s Go Red Wings” in the top of the fifth inning as news spread that Detroit had taken a 1-0 lead over the Blackhawks
in the second period of the playoff game. The hockey game was played at Joe Louis Arena, about five minutes from Comerica
Park. … Cabrera also homered in four straight games with the Marlins in April 2004.

Pacers center Roy Hibbert said Thursday that he believes Heat forward Shane Battier intentionally delivered a low blow during Miami’s 103-102 Game 1 victory.

“[You] can knee or kick me every time [you] drive [to] the rim,” Hibbert wrote on his account. “I’ll be there [to] protect the rim. That wasn’t inadvertent. Battier knew what he was doing.”

The Eastern Conference finals got off to a painful start when Battier’s right knee hit Hibbert in the groin during the first quarter of Game 1 on Wednesday.

With the game tied at 18 and just under three minutes remaining in the first period, Battier attacked the paint from the left angle. Hibbert slid over from the weakside in an attempt to take a charge, and Battier rose directly into the 7-foot-2 center with his right knee extended. Hibbert’s attempt to block the shot never really materialized, as the blow to his groin doubled him over and sent him sprawling to the court.

Although it initially appeared as if Battier would be assessed a flagrant foul on the play, the referees opted for a standard personal foul.

Battier finished with three points (on zero-for-four shooting) and one rebound in 31 minutes.

Miami prevailed in overtime thanks to a LeBron James game-winner. Game 2 is set for Friday in Miami.

PARIS (AP) –
Used to be the French Open was the scene for clay-court specialists and surprise champions.

Scan the list of past winners and runners-up. There’s Gaston Gaudio and Albert Costa, Guillermo Coria and Martin Verkerk, Andres Gomez and Mariano Puerta. Not so much a “Who’s Who.” More like a “Who’s He?”

The women’s list features fewer out-of-nowhere names, yet does include those such as Iva Majoli, Anastasia Myskina and Francesca Schiavone, who all won the French Open while never making it past the quarterfinals at any other major championship.

With the year’s second Grand Slam tournament set to begin Sunday at Roland Garros, there is little thought being given to that sort of stunning outcome, thanks to Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams.

As seven-time major champion John McEnroe put it: “It’s pretty obvious who the favorite is.”

He meant, of course, Nadal, who won his record seventh French Open title last year and is 52-1 for his career at the place. Consider, too, the nearly perfect way the Spaniard has played after seven months off the tour because of a left knee injury: Since returning in February, Nadal is 36-2, reaching the finals at all eight tournaments he’s entered, winning six.

“I am enjoying every moment, and eight finals in a row is wonderful,” Nadal said. “Four, five months ago, it was impossible to think about this.”

He wore a wrap of white tape below that troublesome knee while practicing Thursday afternoon on Court Philippe Chatrier with the temperature in the 40s (less than 10 degrees Celsius) for about an hour before heavy rain fell; the forecast calls for more wet weather in the coming days.

Nadal has cut down on the amount of time he spends training on court, one concession to the recurring knee problems, which also forced him to pull out of Wimbledon in 2009, when he would have been the defending champion.

“I’m really happy for him, and impressed that he’s come back,” said McEnroe, an analyst for Tennis Channel, among other TV outlets. “It seems like he’s barely lost anything, if at all. Right now, he seems to be finally, he says, playing the best he’s been playing the whole year, which is sort of frightening for the other players.”

And yet Nadal will not be seeded No. 1 when the draw is held Friday.

That’s because the French Open decided to strictly follow the rankings, and Nadal’s time away deducted enough points that he is currently No. 4 (he’ll move up one spot to No. 3 in the seedings, because No. 2 Andy Murray, the reigning U.S. Open champion, withdrew because of a bad back).

Tournament director Gilbert Ysern explained that while he could have opted to ignore the rankings – and even contemplated doing so, because Nadal is “the best player on clay” and Roland Garros “is a bit like his garden” – there wasn’t a consensus it was the proper thing to do.

“You can understand the argument that those who are higher than him in the rankings in a certain way deserve their ranking,” Ysern said, “and to move these players back to move Nadal forward could have been considered unfair.”

Nadal, for his part, did not sound too fussed about the matter, saying, “I had a very good chance to be No. 10 (given the time off), and there are lots of chances to be worse, and I accept the situation.”

So last year’s French Open runner-up to Nadal, Novak Djokovic, will be seeded No. 1, and 17-time major champion Roger Federer will be seeded No. 2.

Djokovic handed Nadal one of his two losses of 2013, in the Monte Carlo final on clay last month, proof that Nadal is not completely invincible, even on the slow surface he dominates.

The No. 1-ranked Williams, meanwhile, has been unbeatable lately. She arrives in Paris having won a career-high 24 consecutive matches and is 36-2 with a tour-leading five titles this season. That’s part of a stretch in which she’s gone 67-3, including titles last year at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the London Olympics.

That 70-match stretch of excellence dates, probably not coincidentally, to her last match at Roland Garros, a shocking loss to 111th-ranked Virginie Razzano of France in the first round in 2012. It is her only opening loss in 50 career Grand Slam tournaments – precisely the sort of thing that seems to happen around these parts.

While there certainly are other women who realistically can harbor hopes of lifting the trophy in a little more than two weeks – defending champion Maria Sharapova is the best example – Williams appears to be playing as well as ever at the moment.
