The long list of odds constantly stacked against was produced longer this season when the club had to replace goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov, one of the most significant components of their achievement over the previous two years. They went into the season with Mike Smith, a cost-free agent signed away from the Tampa Bay Lightning more than the summer, as their No. one goalie.
